September

September is a month that will always hold a special meaning to me and my family. During September some 12 years ago, I loss my dad – a man that was so inspirational, loving and kind. He was the type of person who would always help anyone in need. He would build cabinets for those in need, he would spend countless hours with individuals who needed help planning and constructing their homes, he would never tire from those conversations – he actually really enjoyed each conversation he had with those he knew and did not know. He would often jest about how he sold lumber his entire life but in reality never sold a stick – just good conversation he created among many friends of his – some of which I still maintain friendships with today.
He taught me early in life to do all that you love, and to always help those who need your support and everything will fall into place. Even though I have worn many hats already, my true joy is whelping my litters and I never consider it work. I remember my first litter of (Yorkie) puppies. (Yes, I started small as we were in a very small house some 17 years ago.) My dad was there to see these beautiful creatures join us. He wore this big smile and sat on the floor right near to the pups, calling each by a different name. Almost testing the name of the pup that he could not take his eyes off Bows (farthest to the right in the picture) was the pup that he truly wanted to keep. I wanted him to have the pup too, but after thinking about his decision, he said to me, “Pam I cannot spend enough time with this puppy, so I want you to find this pup the very best home.” As of today, I still keep in touch with the family that owned this puppy and although the pup is probably somewhere near to my Dad now, I thank Dad for showing me that the ‘give’ is sometimes better than the ‘get’. He lived his life by always giving.
I want to dedicate this quote to my Dad for those beautiful memories, the feelings of accomplishment, for that jovial happy spirit – but most importantly for his true love that will never dim. I feel he has created the most beautiful beginnings for me and he allowed me to be me and do what I enjoy everyday!
“There are only two lasting bequests we can hope to give our children.
One of these is roots; the other, wings.”
