An ORGANIC Apple a day…

Written by Pam on April 27, 2015

One of my friends gave me an article on the benefits of organic foods vs those that are non-organic and I wanted to share this information not only with my HGT families but also for anyone who reads our blogs.  We need to make sure that what we buy as a healthy snack; is truly that but it needs to be organic.  We also need to think about what we give our pups and dogs – they too, should also get the same organic selected fruits and veggies.

The article focused on the  ‘dirty dozen’ when it comes to fruits and veggies.  The dirty dozen was a reference to those fruits and veggies that contain pesticides – and there are many – like 42 different toxic pesticides.  Further the article explains that Europe recently banned America’s apples because their toxins pose such dramatic health risks.  I eat apples all the time – those delicious McIntosh, Gala or Granny Smiths… and I wash them with soap + water – yes I do. But from what I understand the skin does not prevent the pesticides from entering into the flesh of the apple.  So we need to spend a little more money on those same apples but get them in the organic section.  Further, I also give the dogs their apple snacks – a cored apple is fun to chase around the kitchen before eating it – so this too will need to be organic.

Below are the ‘dirty dozen’ or HUMAN foods with the highest pesticide rating!

1 Apples

2 Strawberries

3 Grapes

4 Celery

5 Peaches

6 Spinach

7 Sweet Bell Peppers

8 Nectarines (imported)

9 Cucumbers

10 Cherry Tomatoes

11 Snap peas (imported)

12 Potatoes

Out of the above list there are only a few that can be given to the dogs or puppies but make sure they too are organic!

1 Apples

2 Spinach

3 Snap peas or String Beans

4 Potatoes (cooked not raw)

NEVER – EVER give the dogs or pups: onions, garlic, chocolates, raisins or grapes – or any of other items listed above as I am not sure and have never given any to my dogs.

We want our HGT pups to be well-balanced, obedient, nourished, but most importantly we want for them to live a joyful life of longevity.  So always think first about the food you purchase for your puppy and think about the healthy ORGANIC snacks you give them.  At Pick-A-Puppy weekend, I will talk to everyone about certain puppy foods that will benefit your puppy and those that I would not recommend.  In the mean time, look into certain foods that you might want to purchase and I will give you my opinion when we meet.  We offer Life’s Abundance as the food of choice here at HGT. Thanks, Pam
