Fur & Feathers
Written by Pam on August 19, 2015
Today we decided to take our act out-of-doors and on-the-sound. We wanted the dogs to join us but there were those society signs again – so they could not join us. We were only relaxing for a few minutes when we were joined by a young seagull who wanted our attention.
It truly amazes me that once an animal, with fur or feathers, trusts a human, then the true appreciation of that animal occurs for the human and for the animal there lies contentment, the feeling of safety and the start of trust. This young seagull was among many that flew overhead but it was only this seagull that landed very close to where we were and decided to study us from a distance … then closer and closer until he was at an arm’s reach away.
Please enjoy the video and the pictures – I could not resist this young seagull and offered him some lettuce from my salad. We did not have any bread that I am sure he was thinking would come his way but the lettuce was truly an attraction for him and he enjoyed each piece I gave him.
Once home we had a very happy – hungry retriever clan – so with some subtle commands, the pack listened and received some yummy kibble. Today, I thought about this lovely poem by Emily Dickinson, that I have shared in the past and want to share it again. Enjoy the pics, video & poem!
“Hope” is the thing with feathers “
By Emily Dickinson 1830–1886
Hope is the thing with feathers That perches in the soul, And sings the tune without the words, And never stops at all, And sweetest in the gale is heard; And sore must be the storm That could abash the little bird That kept so many warm. I’ve heard it in the chillest land, And on the strangest sea; Yet, never, in extremity, It asked a crumb of me.
