HGT’s Pam…pered Pets!
Written by Pam on September 16, 2015
I just finished reading an article about some essential oils that are good for our dogs. Not only will these recipes make the puppy smell wonderful but the recipes can help fight off those nasty fleas.
Once a dog gets into a flea situation it can be very tricky to get rid of (all of ) them, but essential oils are great for keeping them off and away. I am providing you with a couple of the herbal solutions that were mentioned in the article so that you have the recipes handy just in case you need to de-flea your dog. Two of the most common oils used are lavender and cedar oil for dogs. I am not familiar with the cedar oil but we use Life’s Abundance lavender blend products on our dogs and puppies here at HGT.
If you are currently using Life’s Abundance, you will know that their offerings for the dog’s fur/skin care are very good as well. You can see Life’s offerings under the tab: Eat&BeWell/Care on our website. Look for Soothing Mist, Revitalizing Shampoo or Bath Fresh Mist! Even though the weather is starting to change and getting a little colder in the mornings, the fleas are still around. We don’t want these fleas to interrupt the joys of spending time with your HGT puppy any time of the year so keep these recipes on-hand or you can just purchase Life’s dog care products. Whatever you choose, PLEASE make sure you do not spray or get any of these oils near the dog’s eyes, ears, nose or mouth – These recipes are for topical use only :*)
Recipe 1:
- 3-5 drops of Cedar or Lavender Oil
- 1-3 tablespoons of water
- Bandanna or your dog’s collar
- Eyedropper
Dilute the oil in the water then apply 5-10 drops to the bandanna or apply to the inside of the dog’s collar. Reapply the mixture to the collar/bandanna once a week. Make sure the bandanna and/or collar is not too tight – just so the mixture touches the dog’s fur.
Recipe 2: If the fleas are around the tail area:
Dilute 1 or 2 drops of Cedar or Lavender Oil with at least 1 tablespoon of olive oil and place it at the base of your dog’s tail.
Recipe 3: Flea Spray
- 1 cup white distilled vinegar or 1 cup apple cider vinegar or a 50/50 blend of both
- 1 quart fresh water
- 2-3 drops of Cedar or Lavender Oil
- Spray bottle
Combine all ingredients in the spray bottle. Mist your dog with the spray, again please be careful not to get it in their eyes, ears, nose or mouth (avoid the face in general). To get the area around their neck and behind their ears take a cloth and lightly dampen it with the mixture and wipe it on. You can also spray your pets bedding with this mixture.
Please drop us a comment if you have tried any of these recipes or any other homegrown remedies that we have blogged. If you have some recipes of your own, please share them! Enjoy, Pam
