I believe in …GOOD!

In this blog I want everyone to think about how to train your HGT puppy.  Just think about it, the pups are going on 3 weeks, and how those weeks go by so quickly that the 8th week will be here in no time.  So take a day to read all the information available on our website or on-line about how to train your puppy properly.  Then when you are ready to start your training make sure there are not too many interruptions.  Pick a quiet place that you and your puppy can spend some time bonding and learning (from each other!)

First start with ‘sit’.  The sit command is one that we teach here at HGT before our puppies leave us – so this should be a refresher.  Once the pup ‘sits’ for you, immediately start the praising.

Then go over the ‘down’ command.  Here at HGT we teach the down but we do it very differently than any instructions you can read on-line. My only purpose to teach a dog – down – is to make sure he knows what I want him to do when he is NOT near me.  In a situation where he can be in danger, I want him to see me and to immediately go ‘down’.  I do this with my hands raised high above my head, so that he can see me from a distance and know what (in the world) Pam is doing.  Believe me they know, they learn and this one command can save a HGT pup’s life if the command is taught correctly.

The ‘say-hi’ or ‘paw’ command is actually a quite normal occurrence as the puppy loves the contact with his master and will try every way to get your attention.  Once the paw is raised, grab on gently and praise.  This will instantly be a connection to the pup, that this is a good thing and one that its owner likes – so he will do it again and again.  You will see…

Remember when you pick up your HGT puppy at 8-weeks, the world is all brand new to it although all of these commands will be taught here at HGT.  The puppy will already know the ‘command word’ but you will need to do all the reinforcement training.   The pup will learn to do exactly what you want but you need to always have patience while you are training him.  There will be days when he just wants to have fun and might not be on-spot – so those days just have fun and do more training some other time.  Believe in Good, and I promise you, you will get HGT GREAT!  Enjoy, Pam
