Is Naughty the new Nice?

Written by Pam on December 16, 2015

Well, when we are talking … puppies, absolutely not! Naughty is NOT the new Nice!

Our little litter of golden grands are learning what I expect from them slowly but surely.  They have just started this learning process – so when I hand you this beautiful – smart creature, you should always continue the training – good training, not “oh, that is so cute” …training. What I mean by this is if the puppy does something naturally without any reinforcement that you actually like and CAN LIVE WITH, then I would say, praise the puppy and give that behavior a name.  But if the puppy does something seemingly natural, and you DO NOT or CANNOT NOT LIVE WITH, you need to immediately stop the behavior and redirect the pup’s attention.

Counter surfing, jumping on furniture, jumping on friends, taking the kids things, taking your things, all may seem funny and even enjoyable to some, but this is the puppy’s natural instinct to explore, retrieve and proudly bring you these items.  But you must keep in mind when this puppy turns 70 – 80 lbs, you will not think this behavior is enjoyable and it will take a talented trainer to help stop this behavior.

The Naughty can be trained to be Naturally Pleasing – Please look over the Do’s and Don’ts of Puppy Rearing below.  THEY ARE IMPORTANT!

DO:

Do buy a Large Dog Kennel with a divider, Do start talking with the kids about the things that are good for the puppy and those that the puppy should never NEVER ingest.  Kids love sharing their toys and especially what they eat.  Remember that the puppy cannot and should not eat what we eat.  Remember: No CHOCOLATE, RAISINS, GRAPES, ONIONS, GARLIC.  Do schedule your vet visit and Do program our telephone number into your cell phones – we are always here to help!

DON’T:

Don’t buy Stuffed toys, the stuffing will come out and can get ingested. Purchase toys without the stuffing or stick to Kong toys.  Never – Never purchase raw hide for your puppy or for our HGT dogs.  They love it, but this too can become stuck and require emergency surgery. Also the raw hide has toxic formaldehyde on it which is certainly not good for our dogs. Don’t forget to get the puppy its vaccinations at the 9th week, 12th week and 16th week – yearly then after :@)

Below is a video and some pictures of how we start slowly on the training, but you can see the eagerness the pups have to try and do what I am asking.  In a couple of the pictures the pups start their own game and have found another use for our HGT’s To Have & Not To Hold Hipster Hold leashes!  The pups are not quite 7 weeks and they truly amaze me.  Enjoy, Pam
