Ovary-Sparing Spay – an alternative to traditional spay/neuter
Vasectomies – Tubal Ligation – Ovary Sparing Spay…
Lately we have been getting many calls/emails from concerned HGT families wanting to know what is the best path to take when discussing with their veterinarians alternatives to altering their HGT puppy. Being a breeder, I need to first clarify that I feel the need to express that all pure breed dogs – especially those that clear all their genetics and health clearances and those that are bred from healthy – beautiful lines – should not be altered unless there is clearly a medical need. As a responsible breeder, in order to continue great breeding lines, it is of the utmost importance to breed the best to the best. But having said this, I understand the needs to limit unwanted pregnancies, to keep our dogs safe from the periodic desire to wander, to focus on the longevity of your dog and to enjoy our dogs as champion pets!
After talking with one of our wonderful HGT families who already owns a – jaw-dropping, head-turning beautiful chocolate labrador, Dusty, I wanted to write this blog to help other families answer one of the most frequently asked questions I receive: “Do you know of a veterinarian who offers alternative spay-neuters?” This question is often prompted by the concerns surrounding the dogs surgical recovery time associated with the traditional spay/neuters, increased incidences of certain canine cancers, and more obese dogs. In articles that I have read, it seems like the mounting evidence indicates that in at least large dogs, the health benefits of keeping the hormones may outweigh the health risks – so in keeping one ovary it still allows the female to produce the necessary hormones.
To find a veterinarian that performs these Ovary-Sparing Spays or Vasectomies is getting harder and harder to find. I would like all our readers to follow the Parsemus Foundation, https://www.parsemusfoundation.org/projects/veterinarian-list/. Or to following this link if you have a facebook account: (https://www.facebook.com/groups/alternativealteringinfo/) This foundation and the link provide providers/veterinarians (by state) that offer alternatives to traditional spay/neuter.
I have blogged before about an inspirational author/mentor/dog lover ..who I have never met, but have read his books over and over again, please search for TED KERASOTE – you will be amazed and delighted that you did. You may also want to visit my blog entitled: What’s Good for your Kokobo…Altering our puppy/owner dynamics –Let’s try trust…and release the control – which goes into detail about information that we have gathered from reading Kerasote’s books! Always feel free to call us – Love, Pam
