The Golden Rule :@)

In this blog I want to talk about …not only…all those beautiful things golden – but our Golden rule in society. This Golden rule, as we know it, is simply to treat others or do unto others, as you would have them do unto you or how you want to be treated. I want to extend this meaning to include …‘do unto dogs…’
I recently received an email from one of our wonderful HGT Labrador families. In this email the family wanted me to read this article about how some people restrict their dogs to the point of harming them. They are insistent on placing these pronged collars or worst a choke collar on a young dog. I understand that every dog is different but every dog learns from their human. Our dogs are as innocent as our children and need to understand what is acceptable and what is not. To me, using either of these two collars is unacceptable, immoral, uncaring and will cause the puppy or dog a life time of fear and serious health problems.
The article, written by Dr. Peter Dobias, DVM talks about “A Jerking Experience”. Dr. Dobias writes how one jerk can cause a host of problems and each problem can last a lifetime. We learn about how can our dogs develop hypothyroidism, eyes and ear issues, constant paw licking, well all of these unnecessary symptoms can be caused by jerking the puppy’s collar! Horrifying and true.
So if there is a message I am trying to get across here is to pick the right collar for your puppy. Always thinking to keep him safe and to allow him the time to get use to what we are requiring from him. By placing this thing around their neck is not a natural occurrence, and it will take time for the pup to adjust. We need to introduce the collar to keep them safe, so we need to make sure we choose the right collar at the start. We need to treat our puppies and our dogs with the same respect that they show us – just be cautious as to your choices in collars, leashes, etc.
As a matter of fact, our HGT’s To Have & NOT To Hold collars are wonderful as our testers have informed us. But our next batch will carry a little something extra. On each collar we are thinking about adding a suitable – specially arranged neoprene piece. Just an extra love-knot, if you will, for all of our HGT pups so they will experience the safety, the freedom and now the added protection they deserve.
Enjoy, Pam
